Support and Socialization

How can I find other homeschooling families?

Homeschooling is not uncommon anymore. In larger areas, there may be support groups or other homeschool gatherings that might interest you. Using the internet or talking with other homeschooling families is a good way to find out what is going on in your area.

In areas with smaller populations, spending time doing things you enjoy often leads to finding people who share your interests. Many times homeschooling families meet other homeschooling families in these situations.

Spending time at places homeschoolers frequent (library, parks, etc.) is a great way to meet other homeschoolers. Your local librarian may also know other homeschooling families in the area.

A homeschooling support group can be a great way to get new ideas and find new resources to use in your own homeschooling.

How do I know which group is right for me?

It is not necessary to belong to a homeschooling support group. If you choose to join a homeschooling support group, spending time with the group makes it clear if it is a good fit or not.  Ask questions about activities, membership and philosophy. Only you can decide if a homeschooling group is right for you and this may change over time.

Ask if you can join your local support group and WHPA at the same time – both groups benefit.

How can I be sure my child is well socialized?

Homeschoolers are out in the world and have many opportunities to interact with people in real life situations. Homeschoolers have exposure to people of all ages doing all sorts of things. The process of socialization means learning how to be in the world, learning how to navigate obstacles, and learning how to make affiliations. As for socializing? Activities, clubs, family, friends, sports, jobs, volunteer work—there are many opportunities for homeschoolers to socialize!
